Description
RailWorks constructed a new CSX siding to provide unit coal trains industrial rail access between the railroad’s mainline and Gibson County Coal’s new double-loop track.
Scope
RailWorks constructed a new 8,000-foot siding. Crews began by installing two #15 turnouts – one at the south mine entrance and the other at the south end of the siding – from CSXT’s mainline. The initial phase of the project required an extensive equipment fleet to complete the carefully planned work quickly in tight work windows. Crews installed the turnouts during a series of short work windows totaling less than six hours production time, all without interrupting train traffic on the adjacent main line.
During phase two, crews cut in the north turnout and constructed the 8,000-foot siding.
Unique features
Gibson County Coal operated the Gibson mine, an underground mining complex located near the city of Princeton in Gibson County, Indiana. The mine began production in November 2000 and produces a low-sulfur coal that historically has been primarily shipped via truck. Gibson County Coal expanded its market for coal via rail with the completion of a double-loop track providing access to both the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads.
