Description
RailWorks reconfigured and extended the yard tracks for Iron Mountain Rock Company’s yard expansion project to accommodate 80-car unit ballast trains.
Scope
RailWorks designed and constructed 6,800 track feet. The project required relocating two turnouts and installing a solid rail grade crossing for large equipment. The expanded yard design provided for more fluid yard operations, allowing Class I railroads to utilize unit ballast trains for loading without uncoupling cars.
Unique features
The project required extensive coordination and safety precautions to work around ongoing operations. RailWorks coordinated the expansion and the cutover to minimize the outage period.
