Description
RailWorks rehabilitated two key rail yards at the Port of Tacoma, which is located on Puget Sound.
The Port handles a wide range of cargoes to and from every part of the world. Its four dockside intermodal rail yards are served by the BNSF and Union Pacific railroads, with switching and terminal rail service provided by Tacoma Rail, a division of Tacoma Public Utilities.
Scope
The Chilcote Junction and Bullfrog yards in the port’s rail network are comprised of arrival and departure tracks and supplemental switching tracks. RailWorks rehabilitated track between the two yards and implemented modifications to provide better access to, from and within the yards.
RailWorks took up and reconstructed approximately 24,000 feet of track and installed 27 turnouts.
Unique features
Work on the nine-month, multi-million-dollar project was completed while rail operations continued in both yards. To ensure a safe work environment and maintain progress on the project, RailWorks worked closely with port personnel to schedule work within designated windows.
