Description
RailWorks undercut the track in eight locations along the line to increase the clearance.
Scope
Tracks were removed in sections to allow removal of ballast and sub-grade to lower the mainline under select grade separated highway overpasses. Each location required removing and reinstalling 400 to 1,300 feet of track to establish the new designed grades. Track was generally lowered 6 inches at the low point under each overpass. Access was usually difficult as these underpasses had very little working room to spare. Track was dismantled in panels, hauled out, then hauled back in and set on the new grade and reconnected. Defective ties were replaced as needed. Ditch lines were also restored or improved in each area worked to promote positive drainage with the new track grade. RailWorks then installed the ballast and surfaced the track and welded the rail when required.
Unique features
Work was generally completed over extended weekend outages.
