Atlantic Branch Half Ties
Replace tie blocks on Tracks 1 and 2
RailWorks Transit is replacing damaged and deteriorated tie blocks on Tracks 1 and 2 in Long Island Rail Road's Atlantic Branch Tunnel.
RailWorks Transit completed work in 2015 to replace 21,500 damaged and deteriorated tie blocks on Tracks 1 and 2 in LIRR’s Atlantic Branch Tunnel, a 4.06-mile tunnel between Brooklyn and Queens, NY. Starting in March 2015, crews worked during 56-hour weekend track outages to change out ties on one of the oldest sections on LIRR’s system. The $16-million project resumes in the spring of 2016 and continues into the fall.
Employees prep materials and equipment during the week and stage them in a yard near the tunnel portal. Materials and crew members travel by hi-rail to the work area in the tunnel. Day and night crews keep the work going around the clock, from Friday night until Sunday evening, replacing ties on one of the rails, while the other track is stationary.
