Cost efficiency and environmental sustainability made NARSTCO steel ties and turnout sets an easy choice for New York’s Finger Lakes Railway.

Finger Lakes Railway, which owns and operates more than 160 miles of track in upstate New York, and connects with CSX, Norfolk Southern, and New York Susquehanna & Western railroads, confirmed that NARSTCO products were a superior option for use in its busy Geneva, N.Y., railyard. NARSTCO supplied approximately 700 steel ties and 8 steel switches to the short line.

“In an active railyard like our important Geneva Yard where we classify and supply customers with railcars, the steel ties have the potential to properly function for 50-plus years versus a 20-year lifespan for wood ties in this location,” said Mike Smith, President of Finger Lakes Railway.

When it was decided to make upgrades to Geneva Yard, the decision to use NARSTCO steel ties was based upon long-term economics. Factors like, daily track usage, traffic density, and future maintenance costs had an impact on the final decision to install NARSTCO steel ties.

“NARSTCO steel products are made from recycled materials and are able to be recycled after their long-service life, making our products the environmentally smart choice for rail customers,” said Matt Violin, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing at NARSTCO. “Increasingly, short lines like Finger Lakes Railway are recognizing the many benefits of NARSTCO’s steel products when considering their total cost of ownership.”
