The Mass Coastal Railroad was looking for a cost-effective way to rehabilitate an aging wood turnout at its Maintenance Shed in Rochester, Mass., a key part of its operations.

The installation of NARSTCO’s #8 Steel Turnout in this location provided all the operational benefits to the customer, with the added bonuses of shorter install time, and precise design and assembly.

For more than a decade, the Mass Coastal Railroad has provided integrated rail freight and logistics services to business and industries throughout the South Coast of Massachusetts. The railroad operates a network of lines totaling close to 150 miles of track stretching from Framingham to Hyannis.

Northern Rail services, of West Springfield, Mass., installed the NARSTCO turnout. “Our crew typically takes three days to install a timber switch, yet NARSTCO’s steel switch only took one full day,” said Michael D’Amours, President of Northern Rail Services.

Customer and partner support throughout the project, particularly from Mark Renker, Chief Engineer of Mass Coastal Railroad, and Jacobs Engineering, was key to project success.
