- Replaced tie blocks on Tracks 1 and 2
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)
Western Long Island, New York
RailWorks Transit, our civil/mechanical contractor serving transit authorities in the Greater New York metro area, replaced damaged and deteriorated tie blocks on Tracks 1 and 2 the Atlantic Branch Tunnel of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).
RailWorks Transit completed work in 2015 and 2016 on the $16 million project on the tunnel, which runs 4.06 miles between Brooklyn and Queens. Crews worked during 56-hour weekend track outages to change out ties on one of the oldest sections on the LIRR system.
Employees prepped materials and equipment during the week and staged them in a yard near the tunnel portal. Materials and crew members traveled by hi-rail to the work area in the tunnel. Day and night crews kept the work going around the clock, from Friday night until Sunday evening, replacing ties on one of the tracks, while the other track was stationary.
