RailWorks Track Systems constructed a new 0.8-mile, two-track extension to New Orleans’ streetcar system. Crews completed construction on 8,300 track feet of standard embedded track for the Union Passenger Terminal to Canal Street Expansion Project, or Loyola Avenue extension. Starting at the Union Passenger Terminal inter-city rail and bus station, the new double-track line runs along Loyola Avenue.
RailWorks also installed six turnouts. RailWorks and Archer Western demolished and removed the existing track on Canal Street in preparation for the installation of two half-grand-union junctions.
The extension of the New Orleans tram network opened on January 28, 2013, just in time for Super Bowl XLVII. All the fans in New Orleans for the Super Bowl were big winners. Getting to the game was easy on the new streetcar extension.
