RailWorks constructed a new, high-capacity rail unloading facility at Tesoro Corporation’s refinery in Anacortes, Wash.

RailWorks crews installed 5 miles of track and 21 switches for the new, high-capacity unloading facility. Working on an expedited schedule, crews built four tracks parallel to existing railway and tie-up tracks that can store four locomotives.

The job was part of a new rail unloading system capable of handling four, 110-car trains simultaneously. The expansion allowed the refinery, which formerly received no more than 2,000 barrels a day from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota, to receive 30,000 barrels a day with the intent to ramp up to 50,000 barrels within about three months.
